A Dark Road by Amanda Lance {release day}

The Dark Road Release Day Event

Synopsis

Loner James McKay wants nothing to do with Hadley Grayson. After all, the last thing a drug dealer needs is the pretty, new girl trying to be friends. Walking distractions like her lead to trouble, the kind that can get you 10 to 15 behind bars. Likewise, fencing champion Hadley Grayson isn't thrilled about her family uprooting her during her senior year of high school. At least there's James McKay, the quiet, mad scientist who is as adorable as he is mysterious. Though McKay may reject the idea of friendship, he gets one whether he wants it or not. But once the lies are told and the rumors spread, the dangers of meth making and dealing are impossible to avoid. Between secrets and overdosing classmates, McKay and Hadley will learn that loneliness can be a two-way street, changing both of their lives forever.

Excerpt

Because I stayed up late trying to finish up a batch, I ended up forgetting to set the alarm. The only reason I wake up is because Dog is running something fierce in his dreams again, maybe looking to catch uncatchable tennis balls. The final blow comes when he kicks me directly in the kidney, making my leg jerk up so that I almost kick him in the face. “You’re lucky I love you, you furry son-of-a-bitch.” He gives me a look that tells me to go screw myself and yawns in my face. “Jerk.” It’s past ten and I don’t want to hear crap about missing more classes, so I don’t bother to do anything except brush my teeth and throw on some semi-clean clothes. My skin is probably combustible by this point anyway, so showering won’t make any difference. Then again, maybe I would get lucky and catch fire at some point throughout the day. At least that would lighten things up. Hardy har har. Ain’t I clever? No surprise. The Stooges are already waiting for me in the parking lot when I get to school. Twitching more than usual, Sam Anderson looks like he’s about to pick out the last of his hairs from his head. I guess that’s why he cut it so short to begin with. And I swear if Ryan Fuller’s face breaks out anymore, FEMA will have to declare him a natural disaster area. I can see the signs and yellow caution tape now. Warning: Standing too close to this junkie may cause you to go blind from his ugliness. And that’s the thing about meth; it makes you ugly, but not just on the outside. We all end up ugly on the outside eventually (don’t get me started about western standards of beauty) but crank makes you ugly on the inside, like evil stepsister ugly. So ugly that I almost forget when we all used to be friends; Sam, Ryan, Luke, and me, before Mom left and Frank started using, and all that other shit. Maybe meth makes it easier to forget. I don’t know. I must have become too weird for them to hang out with. At least until I had something else to offer them, something that helps Sam and Ryan make weight for wrestling and help Luke make the money for the car he wanted. Then suddenly I’m their best friend again. Poof! Presto! Alakazam! Even that didn’t last long, because now their eyes bug, and they itch, and twitch. They bug, itch, twitch and they sell. They sell for me. I know it isn’t smart to shit where you eat, but I keep everything in-check by keeping them in-check. I mean, I don’t even have to pay them; they work for product, for Christ’s sake. I make them their own batch, battered down and diluted so I get the most use out of them for my buck—so to speak. If anything ever did happen, if they ever did turn me in to save their own asses, all anybody would see is a few strung out losers with a story. It would be my word against theirs. And on paper I’m an honor roll student who has never bothered anyone. Then there are other ways of getting rid of evidence should I ever need it, so I’m not too worried about The Stooge aspect of business. I know instantly when I see them that they must be hurting. In a way it’s funny, these guys have no concept of self-control, and they always end up bingeing on what I bring them. Half the time, they want even more than what our original arrangement dedicated and I have to remind them that they’ll have to pay me on top of working for me. “McKay! McKay!” Before I can even get out of my truck, Luke is all over me, practically jumping on the windshield like Dog used to do when he was younger. But when I give him the look, he simmers down a bit and backs off. I thinking figure people are watching us from the windows. I know they aren’t, but I still can’t help but think it. “Dude, how ya been?” I look around, and because the school day is half-over and the parking lot is deserted, but I don’t want to risk a security guard finding us out here, I hold them off a little longer. “I’m not giving you anything.” “Dude, we’re starting to feel the pain here.” As if I cared. Then Anderson makes that whiny sound in the back of his throat and Ryan is scratching at the sores that have formed on his arms over the last few weeks and I am thinking: college, college, college. Out, out, out. So I dangle a possibility in front of them.

Dylan
The light peeking through the curtain of the tiny cabin squeezed through the cracks of Dylan’s eyes. Morning. He tried to roll over onto his side and realized his hand was caught. He yawned, trying to dislodge it and became conscious that both hands were trapped.
What the hell! His hands, they were tied to the bed. He glanced down. His naked body was fuckin’ tied to the bed! Nicole. Nicole was gone. Shit. What the hell happened?
He struggled to break free of the binding, but it tightened as he wrestled with it, cutting off the circulation in his hands. Where the hell is she? Steve captured her. Oh my god! He has her! How the hell did he sleep through it?
Dylan scanned the room for signs of blood, signs of a struggle. She was gone. Steve captured Nicole! He yanked, tugging at the binding. His wallet? His wallet rested open on the dresser in front of him. What the fuck is going on? His eyes drifted to the floor. His clothes were gone. All of them. There was no sign Nicole had even been there. Was he drugged? Why didn’t he wake up?
He thrust his body to the side, trying to break the binding again, throwing his shoulder out of its socket. Ahh. Pain shot through him. He gritted his teeth. He had to find Nicole. He had to save Nicole! Despite the pain, he tried again, propelling his body over. Ouch. He eased back, trying to force his shoulder back into its socket with his body weight.
He must have been drugged. What time is it? He looked over at the digital clock, Six am. What time did we go to sleep?
Dammit! The stabbing pain in his shoulder intensified with every movement. Snap. His face contorted as the shoulder finally jammed back in place.

A shadow passed by the window. Too big to be Nicole. The figure hovered by the door, taunting him. He’s back. He tugged. He pulled. I have got to get up

{excerpt}
Siphonaptera jumped on to the flat roof, hidden by his tiny size and the darkness of the still night. Though stars peppered the skies with diamond dust, their light would no more have illuminated the predator than a candle at one end of a particularly dank, gloomy tunnel.

He paused on his long hind legs, lifted his head, and fixed a beady eye on his prey. Three warm bodies for him to gorge on. If his front legs had been longer he would have rubbed them together in glee at the thought of the crimson blood lying in wait within his unknowing quarry. Blood. His tube-like mouth parts quivered in anticipation. He jumped again and came ever closer. His tiny belly rumbled and he stopped before realising the noise was so minute, nobody could possibly have heard it. Victory would be his! Just one more jump. Two. Three. The excitement of wanting, and knowing it was within reach, filled him in a great rush. And then he knew no more.

A sudden shriek made Lucretia's heart leap and her hand fly to her chest. Her head whipped round and her left eye, hugely magnified behind her monoscope, fixed on her ring-tailed lemur crouched nearby.

"Leibniz, how many times have I asked you not to make noise when I'm at a critical juncture?" She sighed. "What do you have there, boy?"

The lemur sauntered over, arms behind his back.

"Show, Leibniz. Show." She raised herself from the roof and brushed down her dress.

Leibniz reluctantly held his arm forward and opened his paw. Within lay a smudged smear that had once been Siphonaptera. Lucretia peered until she could make out what it was. She stepped back and grimaced. "Well, feel free to eat it. I hate fleas."

The lemur's pink tongue picked the squashed flea up gently and deposited it into his mouth. Leibniz closed his eyes in appreciation and savoured the tiny flavour before it disappeared, which it did rather too quickly for his liking. He scratched his bottom, sat down, and looked up enquiringly at Lucretia. His long black and white striped tail curled like a question mark.

"Don't ask me." She shrugged. "Let's get on with some more work before sunrise." So saying, she lay down on her stomach again and lifted her Newtonian sweeper telescope to her good eye.

"Now, where was I?" She muttered, trying to find the exact patch of sky she had been studying before being so rudely interrupted.

{facts}
I wrote The Lady Astronomer for my eldest son – he was jealous that I had used my younger son’s name in something else I was writing.

I work with an Astronomer on books that require his expert knowledge – the idea for The Lady Astronomer came to me while reading another book that he recommended I read.

The Lady Astronomer is inspired by the life of Caroline Herschel (1750-1848). She suffered from both Smallpox and Typhus, was a milliner, soprano, her brother William’s Assistant – he discovered Uranus, then known as George’s Star for the King who funded the build of the ‘Great Forty-Foot’ telescope – and most importantly, perhaps, became the first woman in recorded history to discover a comet. Not to mention the first woman in the UK to receive a working wage, from the King if you don’t mind.

{my thoughts}
I read a little of everything but this was different than most of my books because it is aimed more for children. I totally enjoyed it though. It had a great storyline and characters. I was interested throughout the entire book. It made me feel like a little kid in a fantasy world. Excellent!!

Resisting Fate Blog Tour {review & excerpt}

{about the book}
Seventeen-year-old Emmy O’Connell is the epitome of a hot mess.

Her boyfriend’s been shipped out of town to some boarding school four states away. Her step douche is constantly drunk and badgering her.  Enter the elusive, cocky, and oh-so-broody Jack Hartman…

The jerk cousin of her boyfriend becomes Emmy’s worst nightmare…times ten. He’s cruel. He’s insensitive. But no matter how miserable or amazing Jack makes her feel, Emmy can’t seem to deny him, especially when he takes on the role of her protector –her pseudo-knight in a black leather coat. “That smart mouth doesn’t sit well with me,” he licked his lips. His eyes never wavered from mine.
I nibbled on my lower lip, just as a small smile graced the edges of my mouth. Oh yeah, my bravado was about ready to kick some ass. I think I kind of liked being a smart ass.

“What are you going to do about it Jack?” I inhaled a breath, taking in his warm, delicious scent. My throat went even drier than before. I practically stared holes into his face as I studied every tiny mark, every single scar on his perfectly flawed skin. He was gorgeous, with a little scar here, a little white patch there. His hotness could have left me breathless for days if I kept up my perusal any longer.

And then I blinked, Christ. I knew exactly what had to be done. I had to kiss him. I had to get this itch scratched and then I had to move on. His eyes darkened, his breath was warm and heavy over my face, and he licked his lips. I blinked. Holy-balls… He wanted to kiss me too.

That ever-present electricity running between us wouldn’t stop. If anything, it only increased our pull. I moved in; his lips touching my lips was all I wanted. I needed to feel again, feel it all with a boy who hated me, but apparently wanted to kiss me as badly.

Dryness on dryness soon changed to warmth on warmth, and when I pressed my mouth fully to his, his hands left my neck, and went to my waist. His fingernails dug into my sides and the son of a bitch pushed me away from him.
So there I was, my head tilted to the side, ready, willing, and able to do whatever the hell this moment led us too, and all he could do was chuckle. Yes. Chuckle.

He was the biggest rat bastard.
Ever.

{my thoughts}
This books was sooooo good! It is YA and has plenty of romance but it also has teen angst, sucky families, and a whole lot of surprises around each turn. Wonderful! I loved the story and I can't wait to read more from this author and in this series!

{about the author}
Just a book reading, writing loving, mommy and USMC wife!
I love to write, even if it isn’t what is conventional and makes everyone feel giddy inside. I usually pull from dreams, or ideas that just thrust themselves into my head. I have what some would describe as a dry sense of humor, and I think its conveyed in my writing. I like to think I am a kick ass chick, but I can also be sensitive. I’m learning to grow thick skin, and in this field, it is definitely needed!
I won’t put anything out that I am not absolutely proud of, but like E.L. James said, “I can’t own people’s reactions to it.” Thanks for reading my work… I do appreciate it!
