Book Review: An Absence So Great

Summary:
Inspired by the engaging stories told through her grandmother’s photographs taken at the turn of the century, award-winning author Jane Kirkpatrick provides a portrait of the tension between darkness and light in the soul of a young woman pursuing her professional dreams.

Despite growing in confidence as a photographer, eighteen-year-old Jessie Ann Gaebele’s personal life is still at a crossroads. Hoping she’s put an unfortunate romantic longing behind her as “water under the bridge,” she exiles herself to Milwaukee to operate photographic studios for those ill with mercury poisoning.

Jessie gains footing on her dream to one day own her own studio and soon finds herself in other Midwest towns, pursuing her profession. But even a job she loves can’t keep those painful memories from seeping into her heart, and the shadows of a forbidden love threaten to darken the portrait of her life.

This is an amazing book! I love reading historic books. This gives you a picture (pun intended) of what it was like for this young girl to live in a what was then a "man's world". She wants so bad to have respect for what she does. Yet she struggles with the teachings of her youth. And then to top it off she's in love with a married man! A man, who in a loveless marriage, who doesn't do much to discourage her. She struggles to find her place in life. It's a really good book. I'm so glad I was given the opportunity to review it.

Homeschool Resouce of the Day: Being A Boy

Being A Boy (PDF ebook)

An absolutely delightful and entertaining book about the life of a farm boy in New England in the early 1800s. As we go through the seasons of the year, we learn of the hard work, play, holidays, interests and pasttimes of farm boys of the day, and also of their family and community life in those bygone days. Written in the later 1800s with a realistic but warm and nostalgic style, this would make an excellent read aloud, and is also a great "living history" book that captures a glimpse of childhood and rural life in pre-Civil War days. What an eye opener.

Highly recommended!

Super Kids Nutrition

Recently I was told about this cool website for kids to teach them about nutrition. Super Kids Nutrition's website is jam-packed with tips and fun activities for kids to help them learn how to eat healthy. They really try to make it fun. Even I found myself enjoying the information on the site.

Did you know that strawberries are a great tooth whitener? Me either! They have an enzyme called malic acid that loosens stains on teeth. So not only are they tasty but they are helpful too.

Gracie is a super picky eater. I mean it's chicken nuggets and mac 'n cheese. ALL THE TIME. I'm hoping that I can try to introduce her to some new foods through some fun ways on the website. We will see!!

Check 'em out!

*Dislaimer: By posting this information I may be provided a Super Kids Nutrition book for free - First 50 Bloggers will Receive Super Crew® Kids Books - and Entered for Chance to Win $250 Towards Stocking Up on Healthy Snacks.*

i Heart Faces Week 12 - “Focusing on Angles” Photo Challenge

This week's challenge is focusing on angles. Which could be taking the photo from above the subject (like I did), laying down on the floor, or even something as simple as tilting your camera. It's fun to think out of the box while taking pictures. Get creative!

I'm entering this photo of my daughter Gracie which was taken on Halloween a few years ago. It was the perfect picture. The lighting was great and it didn't require any touch ups. Well, I thought so...  Overall I just loved the look of the picture.

Book Review: Here Burns My Candle

Summary:
A mother who cannot face her future.
A daughter who cannot escape her past.

Lady Elisabeth Kerr is a keeper of secrets. A Highlander by birth and a Lowlander by marriage, she honors the auld ways, even as doubts and fears stir deep within her. Her husband, Lord Donald, has secrets of his own, well hidden from the household, yet whispered among the town gossips.

His mother, the dowager Lady Marjory, hides gold beneath her floor and guilt inside her heart. Though her two abiding passions are maintaining her place in society and coddling her grown sons, Marjory’s many regrets, buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, continue to plague her. One by one the Kerr family secrets begin to surface, even as bonny Prince Charlie and his rebel army ride into Edinburgh in September 1745, intent on capturing the crown.

A timeless story of love and betrayal, loss and redemption, flickering against the vivid backdrop of eighteenth-century Scotland, Here Burns My Candle illumines the dark side of human nature, even as hope, the brightest of tapers, lights the way home.

I think that I've mentioned before that I really like reading historical stories. I also love family dramas. And this book fits both of those perfectly. Described as "a retelling of the beloved Old Testament story of Ruth and Naomi set in 18th Century Scotland" it's a wonderful book. Liz Curtis Higgs has a way of bringing the past to life. Excellent story!  I was sad to see it end. And now I want to read the sequel...
